Running with the Outback Next
Publisert: 29.07.2026
Together with Lasse Tufte – personal trainer, fitness expert, and author of several training books – we've gathered his best tips on how to combine exercise and family time with the Hamax Outback Next. Equipped with the All-Terrain wheel and Disc brake set, you can bring your child along for a safe and comfortable run.
– Many people think they have to choose between working out and spending time with their family. With a jogging stroller, you can have both. Your child gets to enjoy the outdoors while you get your workout done, says Lasse Tufte.
Once your child is old enough to sit upright without support, you no longer have to wait for a babysitter or the weekend to go for a run. Running can become a natural part of your everyday routine.
From bike trailer to jogging stroller
The Hamax Outback Next is designed as a bike trailer, but with the right accessories, it can easily be transformed into a comfortable jogging stroller.
For running, you'll need:
- An All-Terrain wheel for excellent stability and easy steering on asphalt, gravel, and forest trails.
- A Disc brake set for controlled, precise braking – especially when running downhill.
Together, these accessories provide a safe, stable, and comfortable running experience across a variety of terrain.
How to run with a jogging stroller
Your first few runs may feel a little unfamiliar, but you'll quickly find your rhythm.
Many runners prefer to keep one hand on the handlebar while letting the other arm swing naturally, while others find it more comfortable to keep both hands on the handlebar for added control and power when pushing the stroller. There's no single right technique – it's all about finding what feels most comfortable for you. Use your first few runs to experiment and discover what works best. Whichever technique you choose, try to keep a relaxed grip, maintain an upright posture, and take slightly shorter strides than you normally would. This will help you achieve a more natural and comfortable running style.
– You don't have to run fast. The most important thing is to find a rhythm that works for both you and your small passengers. When everyone enjoys the run, you'll want to do it again, says Lasse Tufte.
Stay in control on downhill sections
Downhill sections are often what concern runners most when using a jogging stroller. With the Disc brake set on the Outback Next, you can easily control your speed without having to rely on your own body weight to hold the stroller back.
On steeper descents, it's a good idea to keep both hands on the handlebar for maximum control. Always wear the wrist strap securely around your wrist for added safety.
Adjust the All-Terrain Wheel when needed
The All-Terrain Wheel can be fine-tuned to ensure the stroller tracks straight. This may be necessary if the weight distribution changes, for example when running with one child instead of two, or if your children switch seats.
Always bring the adjustment tool included with the stroller. A quick adjustment takes just a few seconds and can make your run much more comfortable. It's also a good idea to check regularly that all screws and bolts are securely tightened.
Comfort for your children
A great run isn't just about you – your child should be comfortable too.
The Hamax Outback Next features padded, reclining seats, allowing your child to sit upright when awake or lean back for a nap. The adjustable suspension absorbs bumps from gravel roads and uneven terrain, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable ride.
Remember that while you're staying warm through exercise, your child is sitting still. Dress them a little warmer than yourself, and use the Rain cover when needed. An audiobook or some music can also help make longer runs even more enjoyable.
Let your children set the pace
Even though the run is your workout, it's also an adventure for your child.
Some days they'll sleep through the entire run. Other days they'll want to get out and explore, collect pinecones, or take a break at the playground. A little flexibility makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
– I've learned that the best runs aren't necessarily the longest ones. Sometimes we stop to watch excavators at work or throw stones into the water. That's all part of the experience, says Lasse Tufte.
Make running part of your everyday routine
You don't have to set aside a dedicated workout to fit in a run.
Run to and from daycare, take the stroller to the store, pick up a parcel, or visit family and friends. Many parents also find that a run is a great way to help their child fall asleep. That way, exercise becomes a natural part of your day instead of just another activity to plan for.
Tips for a better run
- Start at an easy pace and give your body time to adjust to the extra weight.
- Warm up during the first few minutes before increasing your pace.
- Maintain good running posture with relaxed shoulders and your eyes looking ahead.
- Use the brakes actively on downhill sections.
- Wear running shoes with good cushioning.
- Check that the All-Terrain wheel is properly adjusted before longer runs.
- Bring water, some snacks for your child, and the adjustment tool.
- Adapt your route to your child's mood and energy level, and gradually increase both your pace and distance.
Get back into running
For many parents of young children, finding time is the biggest obstacle to staying active. With the Hamax Outback Next, the All-Terrain wheel, and the Disc brake set, running can become a natural part of your everyday routine instead of something you keep putting off.
– Don't wait for the perfect day or the perfect workout. Get outside, bring your child along, and start small. Those are often the runs that turn out to be the most memorable, says Lasse Tufte.
Whether you're heading to the store, running to and from daycare, or enjoying a longer run on gravel roads or forest trails, the Outback Next offers a safe, comfortable, and flexible solution for both you and your child.
Start with a short run close to home and find a pace that works for both of you. Before long, running together could become an activity the whole family looks forward to.
