-
What is a dog bike trailer?
A dog bike trailer makes it possible to transport your dog safely and comfortably behind a bicycle. It can be useful for puppies, older dogs, small dogs, dogs with limited stamina or when the cycling speed is too high for the dog to run alongside. Hamax offers Milou S for small dogs and Pluto in sizes M and L for medium-sized and larger dogs.
-
Which Hamax dog bike trailer is best for my dog?
Choose the model based on your dog’s weight, sitting height and how much space it needs to sit and lie down comfortably. Milou S is suitable for small dogs weighing up to 20 kg. Pluto M is suitable for small and medium-sized dogs weighing up to 35 kg, while Pluto L is designed for larger dogs and has a permitted load of 40 kg when cycling and 45 kg when used as a stroller.
-
What is the difference between Hamax Milou and Pluto?
Milou is best suited to smaller dog breeds, while Pluto is designed for medium-sized and large dogs. Both models have front and rear entrances, but Pluto also has openings on the sides. Milou S is intended for dogs weighing up to 20 kg, and the stroller kit is sold separately. Pluto is available in sizes M and L and comes with a bicycle arm, stroller wheel and height-adjustable handle.
-
Which dogs are suitable for Hamax Milou S?
Milou S is suitable for small dogs with a maximum weight of 20 kg and a maximum sitting height of 45 cm. The interior measures 63 cm long, 35 cm wide and 47 cm high. Its compact size, low entry and large mesh panels make Milou well suited to small dogs, puppies and dogs with reduced mobility.
-
Which dogs are suitable for Hamax Pluto M?
Pluto M is suitable for small and medium-sized dogs weighing up to 35 kg and with a maximum sitting height of 63 cm. The interior space measures 78 cm long, 40 cm wide and 67 cm high. Always consider whether the dog can sit and lie down naturally, not only whether it is within the weight limit.
-
Which dogs are suitable for Hamax Pluto L?
Pluto L is suitable for larger dogs with a maximum sitting height of 82 cm. The permitted load is 40 kg when cycling and 45 kg in stroller mode. The interior space measures 100 cm long, 54 cm wide and 80 cm high, providing more room for larger dogs and dogs that need extra space when lying down.
-
How do I measure my dog before choosing a dog bike trailer?
Measure your dog’s sitting height and consider how much space it needs when lying down. Let the dog sit naturally and measure from the floor to the highest point of its head. Also check the dog’s body length and width while it is lying down. The dog should be able to sit or lie comfortably without feeling cramped, but the trailer should not be unnecessarily large, as the correct size provides better stability.
-
How much weight can Hamax dog bike trailers carry?
The permitted maximum load includes the combined weight of the dog and any luggage. Milou S has a maximum load of 20 kg, while Pluto M has a maximum load of 35 kg. Pluto L can carry up to 40 kg when cycling and 45 kg in stroller mode. The combined weight of the dog and luggage must not exceed the limit for the model.
-
Can I transport two dogs in the same Hamax dog bike trailer?
Yes, provided that the dogs have enough space and their combined weight remains within the trailer’s permitted load limit. There is no divider, so the dogs must be comfortable together and able to sit or lie down without crowding each other. Two dogs may require a larger model than their combined weight alone would suggest.
-
How old must a dog be before using the dog bike trailer?
Hamax dog bike trailers must not be used for dogs under 12 weeks of age. A young dog must also feel safe, be able to sit or lie calmly and be introduced to the trailer gradually before cycling. Begin with short sessions while the trailer is stationary, then move on to walking with the trailer before the first bicycle ride.
-
Is a dog bike trailer suitable for older, injured or mobility-impaired dogs?
Yes, a dog bike trailer can make it easier for the dog to join outings when it is unable to walk or run long distances. The low entry, suspension and stable interior can be helpful for older and sensitive dogs. In the event of injury, illness, or back and joint problems, consult a veterinarian about using the trailer, the length of the outings and the most suitable lying position for the dog.
-
Do Hamax dog bike trailers have good ventilation?
Yes, all models have large mesh panels that provide airflow and visibility.
Always monitor the temperature and your dog’s breathing, and make sure the dog has access to water and regular breaks in warm weather.
-
Do Milou and Pluto have suspension?
Yes, Milou S, Pluto M and Pluto L have adjustable suspension with three settings. The suspension should be adjusted according to the dog’s weight and helps provide a smoother ride. Use the same setting on both sides and follow the table in the user manual. The suspension makes the ride more comfortable, but the trailer is not designed for rough terrain.
-
Is a dog bed included when I buy the dog bike trailer?
No, the dog bed is sold separately for Milou S, Pluto M and Pluto L. The trailer can be used without a dog bed, but a fitted bed provides a softer and more stable surface. A familiar blanket can also help the dog feel secure while getting used to the trailer, as long as it lies flat and cannot come into contact with the wheels or other moving parts
-
Is it easy for the dog to get in and out of the trailer?
Yes, all models have a low entry and openings at both the front and rear. Pluto M and Pluto L also have openings on both sides, which can be practical for large dogs or dogs that have difficulty turning around. Apply the parking brake and keep the trailer stable while the dog gets in or out.
-
Can Hamax dog bike trailers be used to transport children?
No, Milou and Pluto are designed for dogs and must not be used to transport children. They do not have child seats or safety harnesses approved for passengers. Use a Hamax child bike trailer when transporting children by bicycle or on foot.
-
Can I use a Hamax dog bike trailer with an electric bike?
Yes, Milou and Pluto can be used with an electric bike that is suitable and approved for towing a bike trailer. Follow the bicycle manufacturer’s instructions and local regulations. The additional weight increases the braking distance, and an electric bike can quickly reach a speed that is too high for the dog and the trailer. Start slowly and practise with a load in a traffic-free, safe area.
-
Are Hamax dog bike trailers compatible with all bicycles?
No, the bicycle must be suitable for towing a trailer, and the rear axle must be compatible with the correct Hamax bike hitch. The standard hitch fits many bicycles with a quick-release axle or axle nut. Bicycles with a 12 mm rear thru-axle may require a compatible replacement axle. Also check that the trailer does not interfere with braking, pedalling or steering.
-
What is included when I buy Milou or Pluto?
All models come with a bicycle arm, wheels, safety flag and the necessary equipment for use as a dog bike trailer. Pluto M and Pluto L also come with a stroller wheel and height-adjustable handle. For Milou S, the stroller kit must be purchased separately if the trailer is to be used as a stroller. The dog bed, rain cover and protective cover are available as accessories.
-
Can I jog with a Hamax dog bike trailer?
No, Milou and Pluto are not designed for jogging, running or rollerblading. They should only be used for cycling and calm walks in accordance with the user manual.
-
Can Milou and Pluto withstand rain?
The trailers provide protection against light rain and splashes, but a fitted rain cover is recommended in heavy or prolonged rain. Rain covers are available for Milou S, Pluto M and Pluto L. Ensure sufficient ventilation, and allow both the trailer and the cover to dry completely after use to prevent moisture, odours and mould.
-
Can the dog bike trailer be used in warm weather?
Yes, but warm weather requires extra attention and good ventilation. Open the relevant weather covers so that the mesh panels provide as much airflow as possible, bring water and take regular breaks. Do not leave the dog in the trailer in direct sunlight or high temperatures without supervision. Stop the trip if the dog is panting heavily or showing signs of overheating.
-
Does the Hamax Pluto dog trailer have side windows that can be opened?
Yes, the Hamax Pluto has openable side mesh windows that provide good ventilation and visibility for the dog. They offer extra airflow on warm days and make it easier for dogs with limited mobility to exit from the side. Practical and comfortable – for both dog and owner.
-
Can Milou or Pluto be used as a dog crate in the car or at home?
The trailer can be used as a familiar resting place at home or while travelling, but it is not a crash-tested car crate. In the car, the dog must be secured in an approved crate or with an approved restraint system for car transport. When the trailer is used as a resting place, it must stand securely with the parking brake engaged, and the dog must not be left unattended.
-
Can the dog stick its head out of the trailer while I am cycling?
No, all openings must be closed while cycling. The dog must not be able to stick its head, paws or tail out of the trailer. This protects the dog from falling out, obstacles, flying stones and moving parts.
-
What should I do if my dog is restless in the trailer?
Go back to an earlier step and make the training sessions shorter and easier. Do not force the dog into the trailer or start cycling until it feels comfortable while the trailer is stationary and being pushed. Reward calm behaviour, practise in a familiar place and end the session while the dog is still relaxed. A calm walk before training may help some dogs settle down.
-
How do I teach my dog to use the bike trailer?
Let the dog become familiar with the trailer gradually and at its own pace. Start indoors, preferably without the wheels, and leave all openings open. Use treats, toys or a familiar blanket. Then attach the wheels and practise having the dog sit or lie calmly inside. Begin with short walks before connecting the trailer to the bicycle and starting with very short bike rides.

Custom-fit dog beds, rain covers, protective covers and additional bike hitches are available for the dog bike trailers. A stroller kit is also available as an accessory for Milou. User manuals and assembly videos are available on the product pages and under support.
-
Can the outer cover be replaced if it becomes damaged or worn?
Yes, Milou has replaceable outer fabric, and the cover on Pluto trailers manufactured from 2024 onwards can also be replaced. The correct spare part can be ordered through an authorised Hamax retailer. Check the model, year of manufacture and article number before ordering to ensure that the cover fits your specific trailer.
-
How should the dog bike trailer be stored?
Store the trailer clean and dry, preferably indoors in a well-ventilated place. Allow both the fabric and any rain cover to dry completely before storage. The trailer can be folded and the wheels removed to save space. A protective cover can be used to protect against dust and dirt, but it must not be placed over a damp trailer.
-
How do I clean my Hamax dog bike trailer?
Use mild soap, water and a soft cloth, and allow the trailer to dry completely after cleaning. Do not use solvents or harsh cleaning agents. The interior can be removed for easier cleaning. Regularly remove mud, hair and moisture, and check the wheels, tyres, connections, zippers and reflectors at the same time.
-
Where are the bicycle arm and stroller wheel stored when not in use?
The bicycle arm can be stored in a dedicated pocket inside both Milou and Pluto. On Pluto, the stroller wheel can be stored in the front pocket when the trailer is used behind a bicycle. The stroller kit for Milou is available as an accessory. When the trailer is used in cycling mode, the parts should be removed and stored securely in accordance with the user manual.
-
Can Milou and Pluto be folded?
Yes, all models can be folded for transport and storage. The trailer must be empty before folding. Remove the dog bed, blankets and loose items, take off the safety flag, and make sure the fabric folds neatly inward so that it does not become trapped. The wheels can be removed to make the folded trailer more compact.
-
Can the dog bike trailer be used to transport luggage or other equipment?
Yes, Milou and Pluto can be used to carry cargo as long as the maximum permitted load is not exceeded and the load is securely positioned. When the dog is in the trailer, loose items should not be placed in the same compartment if they could hit or trap the dog. Use the storage pocket for small items. When the trailer is used without a dog, the spacious interior can be used for equipment, but the load must be distributed evenly and secured.
