How to mount your frame-mounted child bike seat at the correct height

To ensure safe and proper use of frame-mounted child bike seats, it is important that the seat is mounted at the correct height and with sufficient clearance. The seat has a natural suspension and will move up and down during cycling – up to 12 cm. Therefore, the seat must be mounted high enough so that it never comes into contact with fixed or moving parts such as the wheel, fender or luggage rack while riding. This guide shows you how to perform a simple 12 cm clearance test and gives tips on adjustments if the clearance is too small.

Mounting height and clearance

When the bracket and bar are mounted correctly, there must be a minimum of 12 cm clearance between the bike seat and the rear wheel, fender, luggage rack, or other parts of the bicycle. To check the clearance:

  • Install the bracket and bar as described in the user manual.
  • Push the bar 12 cm down (from the back of the bar
  • Repeat the test with the seat mounted on the bar.
  • If the bar or seat touches the rear wheel, fender, luggage rack or other parts of the bicycle, the installation must be adjusted.

Fortunately, there are several solutions – read on for tips on how to get the right clearance.

Insufficient clearance

Adjusting the bracket

If the seat is too close to the rear wheel, fender, luggage rack or other parts of the bicycle, first check if it is possible to move the bracket higher up on the bike frame. Note that the bracket must never be mounted on the seat post.

Adjusting the bracket

Using a special bar

If it is not possible to adjust the bracket high enough with the included bar, you can purchase a special bar that raises the seat 6 cm up and 6 cm backwards. This provides extra clearance from the rear wheel, fender, luggage rack or other parts of the bicycle. Always make sure there is still a minimum of 12 cm clearance after mounting the seat on the bar.

⚠️ Important: If there is still not 12 cm clearance after making these adjustments, this seat cannot be used on your bicycle. In that case, you may consider mounting the seat directly on the luggage rack with an adapter, or using a bike trailer instead.
